Architecture Analysis

I first became conscious of the effects of architecture while I was overseas.

I had grown up in Australia my whole life, with greenery, nature, ancient Edwardian, Georgian, Gothic architecture, and suddenly I visited a place very much modelled on Brutalism, with many buildings in crumbles and with broken windows and graffiti. The urban buildings/apartment complexes all had faded paint, blocked square concrete boxes. I became conscious of it however, because of how bad I felt living and seeing it.

I had thought, prior to this, that I didn’t even pay attention to such things, and nothing from outside could possibly affect my internal serenity. Certainly not architecture. However, even as I blurrily looked off into the distance looking at the city skyline I felt like my soul was being punched, repeatedly.

Dramatic I know.

True nonetheless.

Brutalism architecture

Imagine, if you had to look at this everyday.

Now, I know what you’re thinking- ‘It doesn’t look so bad! Some of the designs/configurations are actually quite innovative!’

How wrong you are dear reader, this is charitable thinking based on first glance. The above images are the pinnacle of Brutalism architecture, this is the best there is.

The Brutalism that I was looking at was like this

What Heavy and Death Metal does to the soul is what these buildings do. They are an inversion of Divinity, of everything beautiful and transcendent and serve to scrape your heart across broken shards of glass ever so slightly so you don’t notice till you bleed out completely.

Yes indeed, buildings must serve a purpose beyond ‘function’.

Compare this with Melbourne Architecture

Melbourne Architecture

It’s interesting bc I attended the University above nearly everyday. I acknowledged and recognised that it was beautiful in an other worldly, larger than life sense, however, it’s amazing how quickly positive things can become a baseline in our lives. It was only when I was engulfed and battered with Brutalism everyday that I truly realised the profound effects of Architecture have on the human psyche, heart, soul and spirit.

Above this, however, is the even more Ancient Architecture of World Fares.

Yes, this architecture no longer exists, Tracey Chapman hit the nail on the head when she said ‘we paved paradise, put up a parking lot’.

One thing I know for certain, if this is what they’re showing us, there’s vastly more beautiful and divine architecture that exists and will exist once more.

What is this telling us?

If we can make it past this coming ‘Great Reset’, we can live 1000 more years in paradise with the former architecture. If we make it past that tribulation, we will probably live in eternity with unfathomable, and nothing which we can base any conception of architecture in for eternity.

It’s also teaching us we can’t rely on external things to be happy, and find and elicit harmony within ourselves. The only way, to achieve the ultimate peace, serenity is to align with G. That is the only thing that can inspire all of the above and beyond.

Brutalism is not a nationally unique concept, it is a deliberate choice by architects, and accepted by populations. To notice something is to have an opinion.

Also, remember, even if you’re engulfed in a Brutalist society, you can create beauty, divnity, and perfection greater than anything above in your own home and in your own rooms.
